This scheme takes ideas and techniques already widely accepted in the public realm, and imports them into housing design. The structure is a steel frame with highly insulated cavity walls. VELUX roof windows maximise light and ventilation, and windows on the south elevation form part of a passive heating/ cooling system. The homes use balconies as 'breakout' spaces, and as an opportunity to increase the quantity of planting. The roof should be clad in aluminium. Internal partitions are non-load- bearing, free-standing screens which can be folded and moved to suit user requirements. These screens can incorporate self-closing doors. Stairs are in aluminium with glass balustrades.
