Chetwoods bags planning for Lichfield scheme

[First look + plans + project data] Chetwoods Architects Leeds has won planning permission for this £14 million hotel and apartments scheme at Friary Outer in Lichfield

The project includes a 65-bed Travelodge hotel, 56 ‘sheltered’ apartments, six ‘affordable’ flats, a restaurant and a 400-space multi-storey car park.

The Homes and Communities Agency-funded scheme re-houses residents from the nearby Sandford Gate neighbourhood which is scheduled for redevelopment. The sheltered housing will accommodate elderly people which make up 25 per cent of the city’s population.

The proposal sought to ‘mitigate’ the multi-storey car park’s impact on adjacent parkland by ‘cloaking’ it with residential apartments.

A statement from the practice explained: ‘The elevations have been developed to mitigate the potential impact of the perimeter residential on Festival Gardens. 

‘The concept is the creation of a terrace of integral buildings with a varied roof line preventing singular massing and monotony.  Projecting bays, terraces, expressed cores all add to the articulation creating a varied elevation – by breaking the mass.’

The hotel and apartments benefit from views of Lichfield’s medieval cathedral.
