Prince Charles’ favourite and least favourite architects will not be on the shortlist for the controversial scheme when it is revealed later this week
Developers Qatari Diar will announce a shortlist of around 10 architects later this week, but Richard Rogers and Quinlan Terry will not be among them. More than 50 ‘serious applicants’ have approached the developers since they rejected Rogers’ designs for the site two months ago under pressure from Prince Charles.
Rogers claims the Prince ‘single-handedly destroyed’ his project: ‘The prince always goes round the back to wield his influence, using phone calls or in the case of the Chelsea barracks, a private letter.’ The Prince wrote to Qatari Diar in support of a rival classicist design for the Chelsea Barracks site by Quinlan Terry.
The developers aimed to have an outline planning application with Westminster Council by the end of the year, but this now seems unlikely. The selection of architects is already a month behind schedule and a wider range of bodies is now involved in the consultation - including the Prince’s Foundation for the Built Environment, the Belgravia Residents’ Association, the London Mayor’s office and Westminster Council.
The AJ will publish the shortlist in full later this week.
