Outline plans for a massive 500,000m² expansion of MediaCity UK in Salford Quays has been submitted by Chapman Taylor
Billed as a ‘20-year proposal’ by project backer the Peel Group - property giants behind the recently completed £500 million first phase of development - the scheme will create an extra 212,000m² of offices, 115,000m² of car parking, 95,000m² of flats, 26,000m² of hotels, as well as shops and leisure uses.
Masterplanner Chapman Taylor is collaborating with planning consultancy the Bain Wright Partnership and others on the submission for the 10ha site east of the existing complex, home to 2,500 BBC staff and the University of Salford’s digital media campus.
A raft of architects including Chapman Taylor, Benoy, Wilkinson Eyre, Fairhursts and Sheppard Robson worked on the initial MediaCity development on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal which opened its doors last year.
A spokesman for the Peel Group said there would be ‘room for [more] architects to be involved’ once planning was approved.
According to the developer and landowner, the plans have been drawn up ‘in line with the city council’s strategy for 2010-2030 [and] devised with regard not only for good urban design principles but also the infrastructure needs of Salford Quays as a whole, including transport and green priorities.’
