Centrepoint is fine show of collaboration

  • Comment

With the continuing discussion regarding Richard Seifert's Centrepoint, the public space is a crucial component.

The fountains by Jupp Dembach Mayen remain one of the best things about the space; they are in good shape and relate well to the building, having found their inspiration in the form of the precast concrete wall above.

Jupp always maintained that the pool around the fountain did not follow his design, and indeed it does look improvable.

Jupp, who was my father-in-law, worked with Seifert a lot at the time and his work is also in the interior public spaces of Centrepoint. In addition there is a major wall sculpture at 101 New Oxford Street, which was Lloyds Bank (now to let).

This all adds up to a major collaboration between an artist and an architect which needs to be acknowledged and protected.
