CASPAR: DEVELOPMENT OF MARKET RENT FLATS FOR THE JOSEPH ROWNTREE FOUNDATION

  • Comment
LEVITT BERNSTEIN ASSOCIATES

caspar is an acronym for 'City-centre Apartments for Single People at Affordable Rents'. The Joseph Rowntree Foundation launched a limited competition asking five teams to produce designs and 'not to be exceeded' tender figures for a site in the Jewellery Quarter of Birmingham. The lba team, with contractor Kajima uk, submitted a proposal based on a timber-frame Volumetrics approach for four-storey flats over a concrete undercroft.

The system - economic even for the as few as 50 units on this project - offers factory-built techniques capable of further refinement in terms of cost and quality for larger applications.
