Green and brown roofs will be incorporated in this ú35 million mixed-use scheme, designed by AWW Architects for private client Howard Holdings. The development, which includes 141 apartments divided between refurbished accommodation and new-build pod construction, has just started on site. Greenfix has been specified to supply the large areas of extensive green roofing where a lightweight system was required; 13 species of sedum encourage biodiversity and provide 40 to 70 per cent surfacewater runoff attenuation. The heavier brown roofs (using broken-up masonry from the demolition of the Exchange building) are above the lift cores and will colonise over a period of three years. This will be the first brown roofing in Croydon and the Council hopes it will be an exemplar for future development.
