Canterbury School of Architecture at the University for the Creative Arts

Canterbury shares a campus with a flourishing  art college founded by the artist Sidney Cooper in 1882

The school

Canterbury shares a campus with a flourishing  art college founded by the artist Sidney Cooper in 1882. It is part of the biggest arts university in the UK, with 6,500 students from 76 countries studying on five campuses.

The show

If this show is a prelude to what Canterbury can achieve under its new head, Allan Atlee, then things can only get better for the university.

How is it presented?

A professional approach to presentation means outstanding work is able to shine – from the freehand sketches from a first-year field trip to Rome to the presentation of an urban portrait of Canterbury.

Star students

The degree school chose New York as the site for its show. Luke Hills’ Meat Smoking Centre – showing animals hoisted by the heel and ending with only the sound of the pig’s squeal – is presented as a metaphor for life postbanking crisis. It’s reminiscent of Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle, the book that nearly brought down Teddy Roosevelt, and put me off sausages for life.

What about the diploma students?

The Diploma School took Cedric Price’s 1965 radical critique of the university system, ‘The Potteries Thinkbelt’, as its starting point, with Ivan Chang transporting the proposed education infrastructure as a link between Oxford and Cambridge.

  • Just thought I'd point out the image attributed to Luke Hill is in fact by Beth Lambert from the Diploma. The rest are split between Beth and Ivan Chang.
