The property world and its camp-followers of architects, lawyers and planners descended on Cannes with a vengeance yesterday (Wednesday) for the Mipim exhibition and conference. This legendary annual binge is one where more money is spent on yachts, hotels, wine and song (not to mention women) than at the Cannes Film Festival. It is the ultimate networking event, and we can safely say that more deals will be initiated and secured than during a month of normal working back in London. There will be a huge variety of architects represented, with pride of place probably going to bdp, which can lay claim to being the largest practice in Europe. The huge Pipers model of London will be on display on the London First stand, where among other things the Paddington Basin and Goods Yard development will be officially launched. Southwark Council will take the opportunity, courtesy of the Foster bridge, to present itself as part of the City of London. Other entertainments will include the notorious Street of Shame journalists dinner, and a new feature: the late-night club hosted by Wordsearch in the Carlton Hotel. Naturally it will be called the Carlton Club. The name replaced an earlier idea: the Coco Club. Some thought that might convey the wrong image.
