Camden Council has launched an attack on Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands and Sheppard Robson’s £750 million plans to redevelop the former Middlesex Hospital site in Westminster
According to the AJ’s sister publication Construction News, the London council wrote to its neighbouring borough last month to raise objections to the plans which are to be considered by Westminster’s planning committee next month (February 2012).
Camden believes the scheme for the 1.2 ha plot should be rejected on the grounds it is ‘incongruous’ with the local area ‘by virtue of its height, bulk and massing’.
The authority is worried that the huge project, which includes 20,000m² of offices, 237 private homes and 54 affordable flats as well as 2,000m² of shops and restaurants would have a detrimental effect on the Charlotte Street Conservation Area for which it is the planning authority.
Camden’s director of culture and environment Rachel Stopard also raised concerns the development ‘by virtue of excessive parking on site and poor quality of residential and cycle parking’ failed to promote sustainable transport to the detriment of local residents.
Plans for the scheme, which is backed by Kaupthing, Aviva Investors and Exemplar Properties, were lodged with Westminster on 14 September.
The council has previously backed a larger, £1 billion Make Architects designed-scheme for Candy and Candy, dubbed NoHo square.
The total construction value of the current development is understood to be in the region of £160 million.
