The chief executive of the Olympic Park Legacy Company has said he would welcome hearing from architects and developers who wanted to work on new family neighbourhoods in the park after London’s 2012 Games
Speaking at the MIPIM international property fair in Cannes, Andrew Altman told the AJ he wanted to collaborate with developers and help them choose design teams for 800 new homes which will be built next to the Olympic Village once the Games are over.
He said: ‘We would be very interested in hearing from architects directly and who are interested in our vision.
‘We will work with developers on the choice of their architectural teams and we are open to how these partnerships will work.
He added: ‘There is an opportunity to do something very different here and we want team who understand our vision. There is a fine line between this and dictating who they should use and we don’t want the design guidelines to be a straitjacket either.’
‘As an estate manager, we are a very engaged landowner. This is the first family housing in the park and it has to set a very high standard. ‘
Part of a renewed masterplan drawn up in part by MacCreanor Lavington (pictured) last autumn, the neighbourhood site in the north east of the park will be open to developer bids from next month and could be carved up into a number of plots. However Altman said for developers to take ‘the risk’, it was likely that these would not be smaller than 50 units and that one developer could take on thee whole plot.
Altman added: ‘This will be a contemporary interpretation of terrace. The important thing is to get the grain right and encapsulated what London is about. London is such a great model of urbanism and if we hope to recreate that and the model form of streets and squares.’
The neighbourhood, which will be developed from 2013, will be centred around 3,000 sq m of community and ancillary facilities including a polyclinic, two nurseries and a community centre. The homes will be served by Chobham Academy School which will open as part of the 2,800 unit development in the neighbouring Olympic Village.
