Cable-stayed . . .

  • Comment

You read it here first (actually on 19 March): Mercable Transport Company, a South-east London consortium, has now announced plans for a £35 million,mile- and-a-half-long cable car from the Greenwich Dome, over the Royal Naval College and past the Royal Observatory. Support pylons would be up to 50m high at 100-200m intervals, and the whole idea is currently being considered by Peter Mandelson and Greenwich council - and preservationists. It would give a new twist to the old advertising slogan, 'go to work on an egg', as the cars would be egg-shaped 'to symbolise the birth of the new millennium'. Oh dear.
