CABE slates HGP Architects' Barnet scheme

CABE has damned a HGP Architects’ scheme in Barnet in its latest design review, branding it ‘fundamentally flawed’

The mixed-use development on the former East Barnet Gas Works includes an Asda store, 211 apartments and a mix of other retail and community uses. However, CABE has raised major concerns over the planning strategy. The report says: ‘The scheme could threaten rather than complement the high street, the site itself does not support a supermarket-led development and the development would, through the proposed road diversions, become car-based.’

CABE also claims the architectural challenge of combing the Asda store with residential use has not been met and the design puts the needs of the residents behind those of Asda.

In conclusion, the review said: ‘In our view, the proposed scheme is fundamentally flawed and should be refused planning permission. The local authority should provide strong leadership in bringing forward an economic and masterplanning vision for New Barnet’s centre to give developers a clearer direction on the role sites such as this should play in its future.’

HGP Architects would not comment when contacted by the AJ.
