CABE’s Crossrail design review panel has welcomed Stanton Williams and Hawkins\Brown’s proposed new station at Tottenham Court Road
The design watchdog said the large glass entrances to the joint London Underground and Crossrail station next to the Centre Point tower could become ‘exciting new landmarks’ for central London.
The commission also said any proposed reduction in the height of the prisms – a move mooted by the London Borough of Camden and English Heritage – should be resisted and ‘would not improve the design’.
These fears seem to have been allayed in recent days. A spokesperson for Transport for London told the AJ: ‘Camden Council recently raised some minor queries about the height of the glass canopies and was addressed through the provision of additional information by London Underground and architects Stanton Williams.’
CABE said it also supported the move to ‘retain and restore’ the mosaics of Eduardo Paolozzi, described by the design review panel as ‘perhaps the only pleasurable aspect of the existing Tottenham Court Road Station’.
But the commission did raise concerns about the approach to improving the notoriously dire public realm near the current station.
The panel said: ‘Given the importance of the public realm around the station to the success of this project as a whole, we think it is essential that this is dealt with through a formal planning application.
‘As a comment on the design process which we hope can inform other Crossrail projects, we regret that designs for the station and landscape around it have not been developed in parallel. This would have allowed for an iterative design process, with streetscape design ideas informing the station design and vice versa.’
