Cabe down to just 11 staff as more depart

Three more members of design watchdog Cabe, including its head of design review, have taken voluntary redundancy

The departure of Alan Thompson and design review advisors Jonathan Freeman and Faye Tomlinson means the team, which at the height of its powers employed around 120 people, is down to just eleven.

A large chunk of funding for the team, officially known as ‘the Cabe team at the Design Council’ came from the Department for Communities & Local Government, but its £2.4 million a year cash injection stops on Sunday.

A spokesperson for the Design Council said while the order book for design reviews was ‘strong and looking positive,’ they anticipated a ‘crunch point’ once the DCLG money stopped.

He said: ‘We always knew we would need to restructure the team at the end of that funding period. It allows us to be more flexible and to take on projects as and when.

‘All the redundancies were voluntary and in that respect we were very fortunate that we didn’t have to go through a redundancy process.’

The news comes a few weeks after the Design Council advertised for a new director of architecture and the built environment.
