Burwell Deakins bags planning for Belfast university pavilion

Greenwich-based Burwell Deakins Architects has won planning permission for a £2.8 million pavilion and refurbishment project at Queen’s University Belfast

The 250m² Cor-ten steel and glass pavilion is next door to the institution’s main lecture theatre which will be overhauled, along with six other auditoriums, as part of the project.

The planning win comes after the practice picked up an RIBA award for its £14.5 million Loughborough Design School project last year.

Practice director Nicholas Burwell said: ‘Broadly speaking, all the work we’re doing at Queen’s is about enhancing knowledge transfer and revolves around introducing dynamic learning structures and technologies.

‘When working at Loughborough Design School, we found that the design and thinking behind university auditoriums was rather prosaic and didn’t reflect pedagogic changes. We used our experience to probe the challenges of creating a much closer relationship between lecturer and student.

‘We consulted with students and staff to help create a design that revolves around enhancing the relationship between the two, using a layer of technology alongside the development of innovative seating plans that challenge the traditional didactic character of lecture theatres.’

The project is planned to start onsite at the end of this month and complete in early 2014.
