Building Images: Seventy Years of Photography at Hedrich Blessing

  • Comment
Essay by Tony Hiss. Chronicle Books, 2000. 192pp. £50

When Mies van der Rohe left Germany for the US he fell into good hands - those of the Chicago firm of architectural photographers, Hedrich Blessing.

They presented the Farnsworth House, the IIT campus and the Lake Shore Drive apartments as persuasively as he could have wished. The firm still prospers, as this well-sequenced collection of its work proves, but - adroit though its current practitioners in colour are - it is the early blackand-white images that leave the lasting impression. Pictured are two photographs by Ken Hedrich: the Field Building, Chicago (left) and the A O Smith Building, Milwaukee (right).
