[First look + plan] Emerging practice Bubble Architects has submitted plans to replace a former college building in South Wimbledon with 24 flats
Led by Patricia Eckenweber, the firm was asked by the University of Arts London to look at the overhaul of a redundant three-storey block.
The proposed new-build scheme features a trio of three-bedroom duplex units, eight two-bedroom flats, 12 single bedroom apartments and space for 19 cars in a basement car park.
The architect’s view
In urban terms, the L-shaped form of the building will complete the existing Victorian terraces as well as providing a west facing communal garden. To integrate the proposal with the context, the building steps in height from five storeys at the corner, down to three storeys next to the existing Victorian terraces.
In keeping with those Victorian terraces, the ground level apartments are designed as duplex units with their own front gardens and private entrances which will give a sympathetic vertical rhythm to the facades. Further articulation is provided by insetting the upper levels.
The communal entrance and reception area are located on the corner which also provides access to the west facing communal garden. All of the units are provided with private amenity space in the form of gardens, balcony spaces and private terraces. The proposed facing material is yellow brickwork to match the adjacent buildings. The recessed upper floors will be clad in bronze anodised aluminium panels and the penthouse will be visually transparent with glass walls.
The building has been designed to comply with Code level 4 of Code for Sustainable Homes and with the principles of Secured by Design.
