Haworth Tompkins, FCBS and Metropolitan Workshop are among a clutch of high-profile practices shortlisted for the £50 million redevelopment of Somerleyton Road in Brixton
Six teams have been invited to submit designs for the prominent, south London town centre plot which is earmarked 280 new homes, commercial uses and a new theatre.
The teams competing for design and build job are Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios (FCBS) with AECOM; Metropolitan Workshop with Tibbalds and Igloo; Mae with EC Harris; Haworth Tompkins with Redloft; and PRP with Mace and Pollard Thomas Edwards with Kier.
Local authority Lambeth Council had previously sought a development partner for the 1.5 hectare plot but decided to retain ownership and develop the land itself following feedback from the local community.
Around 40 per cent of the new homes will be let at ‘council rent’ prices. The remainder could be a mix of shared ownership, intermediate and market rate housing although the exact details have yet to be decided.
Originally Victorian housing, the street was redeveloped in the 1970s as part of larger unrealised masterplan to reconstruct the entire district around a new motorway system. The road currently features low rise housing and light industrial units.
The deadline for shortlisted teams to submit designs is 10 March.
