Brisac Gonzalez together with Oslo-based Space Group and CF Møller have scooped a prestigious contest to design a new opera house in Kristiansund, Norway
The victorious proposal for a 15,000m² scheme features a 600 seat auditorium, library, rehearsal space, a ballet centre, restaurants, a youth centre and an educational centre.
The site already houses a 19th century school building and an early 20th century ‘people’s house’ which will both be refurbished, connecting to the scheme’s new build element through a ‘ribbon-like’ glass bridge and exhibition gallery.
Edgar Gonzalez, of Brisac Gonzalez, said: ‘I look forward to be working on another Scandinavian project. We have already built in Sweden. At present we are also working on a feasibility study for the Museum of Copenhagen in the historic centre of the Danish capital.’
Gary Bates, partner at Oslo-based Space Group, said: ‘The merger of activities in the Kristiansund Opera and culture house represents culture at its most radical and innovative. We are delighted to have won, and look forward to realising our dreams for this project.’
Other teams shortlisted in the competition included Snøhetta and Gert Wingårdh.
