London airport advisor Daniel Moylan has welcomed proposals by Norman Foster, Gensler and Make to increase air capacity in the south east

Speaking at the IBP journalism awards (22 November), the former Olympic Legacy chair Moylan, who became London mayor Boris Johnson’s air travel advisor in September, said: ‘Foster, Gensler, Shuttleworth. Bring it on. Let’s have all those proposals on the table for an airport in east London.’

Moylan spoke as pressure continues to mount on the government to resolve London’s air capacity shortage. Norman Foster’s £50 billion Thames Estuary Hub proposal, a floating airport nearby designed by Gensler and plans by Ken Shuttleworth’s Make to create a new four-runway Stansted mega-hub are all options on the table for the government.

Weston Williamson has also mooted plans to transform Luton airport into a new four-runway hub.

The mayor – who favours a new airport in the estuary over Heathrow expansion – has already condemned the government’s decision to postpone a decision on air capacity. The independent Davies Commission is due to recommend a way forward after the next election.  

Moylan, who later presented AJ editor Christine Murray with the top prize for IBP Magazine of the Year, said Heathrow was in the ‘wrong place’, claiming ‘too many people’ under its flight path were affected by noise.

Indicating his unashamed support for London’s economic development, he said: ‘I am not the least bit interested in the countryside.’

He called for a hub airport to deliver ‘greater connectivity’, suggesting the facility could include a train station connected to Europe’s high speed rail system.

The economic benefits of relocating the capital’s main airport would benefit east London which suffers from ‘depressingly high levels of joblessness and low life expectancy,’ he went on to suggest.

    Again - can you get this right AJ? There is no airport capacity shortage. DfT figures predict current South East airports without expansion reaching full capacity in 2030!
