The High Court has issued a landmark ruling which may mean developers must provide affordable housing when they plan private schemes. The court supported Tower Hamlets' policy that developers must build 25 per cent affordable housing as part of all new housing schemes. Barrett Homes had objected to the policy which also allows developers to build 33 per cent of affordable homes on land nearby or provide cash for social housing. The court also ruled that developers cannot expect money from the local authority to build social housing.
