Bond Bryan unwraps ‘liqourice allsorts’ school extension

[First look + plans] Bond Bryan has completed this £7.6 million sixth form block for Phoenix High School in Shepherds Bush, London

Constructed from in-situ concrete, the scheme features vertical timber panels repeated at random intervals and framed with vibrant colours (see AJ 22.07.2009).

Jeff Stibbons, director at Bond Bryan explained: ‘This is a complex design that had to work within the constraints of a Conservation Area.

‘Phoenix High School is a former failing school now ranked as outstanding and our design had to reflect the fact that the school will now encourage even better performances from its pupils aspiring to study A Levels in the new building.

‘Most gratifyingly, I have been approached by a number of pupils who, on learning that Bond Bryan designed their new building, have said they would now be interested in a career in architecture, simply because they find the building so inspiring.’

The school’s head teacher William Atkinson added: ‘The design creates an uplifting and stimulating environment by introducing a vibrant concept that motivates learners.

‘The aim of the school is to inspire its pupils and our new Post 16 Centre was designed to achieve this. This has created a visual beacon for the school and the wider community; it is a cathedral for learning.’

Bond Bryan worked with structural engineers Sinclair Knight Merz, M&E consultants CPW and contractors Bowmer & Kirkland on the project.

The post-16 centre building was designed to achieve a BREEAM Very Good rating.

  • Fantastic looking building with a real zing to it.
It seems such a shame that the timber wedges are purely decoration and have no practical function or relationship to the interior. Surely they could at least have been given doors and used for storage...
