Block 3, Tarling Estate Regeneration, London, by S333 in association with Stock Woolstencroft

This mainly four-storey residential block by S333 in East London is among the finalists for this year’s Manser Medal, sponsored by The Rooflight Company

Client: One Housing Group
Contract value: £6.2 million
Structural Engineer: Paul Owen Associates
Mechanical Engineer: Norman Gutteridge
Contractor: Galliford Try Partnership
Date of Completion: June 2008
Gross internal area: 4,635 m2

Judges’ comments: Part of a larger development, this mixed-tenure project was described as a ‘bold and successful attempt to import a continental housing model into London’s East End and to re-interpret it in both the context of a tough urban environment and for a largely Bangladeshi community with its particular cultural and social constraints’. The scheme features dark brown sculpted concrete panels and ‘strident’ yellow panels.

The project marks S333’s debut in the UK and was reviewed in the AJ in June last year (AJ 12.06.08).

  • It's difficult is it not to compare this scheme with the rest of the shortlisted schemes being as they are expensive one-off private new individual houses?
