Black Cultural Archives, Lambeth by Pringle Richards Sharratt

[FIRST LOOK] The AJ can exclusively reveal the latest images of the proposed new Black Cultural Archives (BCA) centre in Brixton, designed by Pringle Richards Sharratt

Won in 2005, the £3.5 million project has finally been submitted for Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) stage II approval – equivalent to an RIBA Stage E detailed scheme.

Part of the historical centre will be housed within Raleigh Hall, a derelict listed building opposite Lambeth Town Hall, which has been leased to the BCA for 99 years by Lambeth Council.

However, the BCA still needs to find an extra £150,000 before March next year in order to secure the HLF award.

If successful, the practice hopes to revamp the existing listed block – for which it secured listed building consent in 2008 – and create a new public building on the recently completed Windrush Square in the heart of Brixton.

Describing the scheme, architect Malcolm McGregor said: ‘The project takes what is currently a dilapidated but Grade II-listed building at risk and both refurbishes it and extends it towards the square.

‘The new building will hold the archive at first floor and create a large exhibition space at ground level. It will be expressed as a stone volume extending forward into the public domain, to join the rest of the ensemble, in a similar language of materials that express its new found status.’

He added: ‘The new will be separated from the old by a glazed slot [housing] the new internal public staircase.’
