London Development Agency (LDA) deputy chief executive Peter Bishop has been appointed chair of the Architecture Centre Network (ACN)

Bishop will start work at the ACN, the development and advocacy organisation for 23 architecture organisations in the UK, immediately.

He was made the first director of design at the LDA when it was created in 2006, becoming group director two years later – a role that saw him take the lead on issues such as the design and development of housing and public space programmes.

He has also served as a planning director for four London boroughs, working on the redevelopment of King’s Cross, Canary Wharf and the BBC campus at White City.

Accepting the position, he said: ‘Good design should not be considered as a luxury. Architecture centres play a pivotal role in supporting individuals and communities in shaping their local areas to form tightly knit, lasting and vibrant places. I look forward to (putting) them in the heart of the new emerging urban agenda.’

The architecture centre network is the ‘national development and advocacy organisation’ for the 23 independent architecture centres in the UK.

Bridget Sawyers, chief executive of the ACN said: ‘I am delighted that Peter has accepted the role. His knowledge and ideas a key player in design excellence will be invaluable in positioning the organisation in engaging people with architecture at an exciting time, as we reach out to a wider range of partners with new local, national and international projects.’
