Birmingham Charrette: The site and existing masterplan

On day one of the charrette, the design teams met Argent’s Rob Groves for a tour of the site to be talked through Glenn Howells’ Architects masterplan, make their own observations and get a feel for the site

The Paradise Circus masterplan

For Glenn Howells Architects, the Paradise Circus masterplan represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to transform this dysfunctional yet important part of the city. Following the city’s domination by highways in the 60s, our ambition for the masterplan is to transform this social, economic and physical environment through a comprehensive redevelopment that addresses movement, creates a world-class setting for our Victorian heritage and reinstates Birmingham’s civic ‘heart’.

Our approach is to provide an attractive and convenient experience through a well-connected, walkable part of the city. Restoring views of important buildings, improving pedestrian connectivity, simplifying traffic and reinstating parts of the historic urban fabric with streets and public squares, will help improve permeability and strengthen links to other parts of the city. These changes should support planned growth beyond Paradise Circus, and ultimately Birmingham’s competitiveness at both a national and international level.
