Big names lined up in Manchester hotel contest

Ian Simpson, Hopkins and Ted Cullinan are among the six practices shortlisted to design a luxury hotel on the site of the demolished Worsley New Hall in Greater Manchester

The finalists in the invited competition, which was organised by the RIBA’s Competitions office for developer Peel Holdings, also includes Allies & Morrison, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios and Copenhagen-based Henning Larsen Architects.

For the last seven weeks archaeology students from Salford University have been investigating the remains of the country house - built in the 1840s to the designs of Edward Blore - which was flattened after World War II.

Peter Nears, strategic planning director for Peel Holdings, the client for the competition said:  “The quality of all the entrants was high, making this a difficult choice.  We were, in particular, pleased to see the careful consideration of the landscape characteristics of the site displayed by the shortlisted practices.

‘The archaeological dig currently being carried out by Salford University has revealed the significant remains of the basement to the New Hall and I am sure this will inspire them – we look forward to the presentation of the final schemes in September.’

The teams will be given until August to work on their design submissions. An exhibition of the shortlisted designs will be held in the Egg space at the University of Salford, MediaCity during September.

A winner will be announced the following month.
