Big guns lined up for RIBA awards assessment

The riba has lined up former environment secretary John Gummer and Coin Street's Iain Tuckett as lay assessors in this year's building awards.

Gummer will serve on the South East section under chairman Robert Adam, and Tuckett under Amarjit Kaisi of RIchard Rogers Partnership in the North and Yorkshire regions. Other names include Sir Christopher Wates, who will be assessing Northern Ireland's output under David Morley's chairmanship, Zaev Aram in the South under Paul Monaghan and Cynthia Grant in East London with Jeremy Dixon.

riba awards chair Marco Goldschmied also revealed more details about his plans to stage the riba awards inside the Dome at Greenwich (aj 11.6.98).

The plan, part of a conscious move to give the awards greater impact, involves staging the awards ceremony in one of six large buildings inside the Dome which Richard Rogers Partnership is designing to service the exhibition 'zones'. Goldschmied said he was confident of securing the space for the project in November this year - the 'window' between the completion of the Dome and the start of construction of each zone. He was due to meet up with the New Millennium Experience Company last week.
