BIG beat Hadid and Foster

Architects BIG beat Zaha Hadid and Norman Foster in an open competition to design Kazakhstan’s new National Library, in Astana

The 33.000m² design, similar to a moebius strip, features two interlocking structures and facades that move from inside to outside and back again.

‘The envelope of The National Library transcends the traditional architectural categories such as wall and roof. Like a yurt, the wall becomes the roof, which becomes floor, which becomes the wall again,’ said project leader Thomas Christoffersen.

I love it, it should put Kazakhstan on the map. Hope they consider our expanded mesh for the facade.

This looks an ideal project for a lightweight natural stone cladding. With the potential for curved stone panels, StoneLite is the only material that can give the designer this degree of creativity and flexibility in his design.
