Urban designer Anthony Meats, who is proposing a London strategic walkway from Hampstead to Whitehall via Portland Place, envisages the latter with extra-wide pavements and lined with public art. Potential funder Reebok is keen, but alas wants to rename a long part of the route 'Reebok Way'. The company would also like to see effigies of sporting giants along Portland Place. There might be a case for a memorial to Gazza outside the riba - the Geordie with the knee problem has a connection with institute president David Rock: the latter was on the books of Sunderland as a lad until a cruciate injury put paid to his career as a footballer. A case of 'When the boot goes in . . . '
