Bennetts' New Street Square green wall lives on

Teething issues with a wall of plants (pictured) at Bennetts Associates’ New Street Square office complex in central London have been addressed, says director Rab Bennetts

He added that the wall has been replanted and will be ‘fine by next spring’.

It was feared this living wall could suffer the same fate as the £100,000 high-profile wall at Paradise Park children’s centre in Islington, North London, which eventually died – the causes of which are still being investigated.

Despite a flourishing eastern face, the New Street Square wall – which covers three sides of a building at the £200 million RIBA award-winning redevelopment – has severely thinned on its western surface.

‘The irrigation system was putting too much water in at the bottom so we had to switch some of the plants around,’ said Bennetts, who also admitted that a one-off problem meant water was switched off in the summer ‘during an exchange of maintenance contractor’ .

‘Green walls need a lot of care and attention but clients like [site owner] Land Securities are able and willing to maintain their properties well.’

The New Street Square wall was designed in collaboration with Clarke Associates, which also worked on DSDHA’s failed Paradise Park wall
