Bennetts Associates' Royal Shakespeare Theatre opens its doors

[FIRST LOOK] Bennetts Associates’ £112.8 million transformation of the Royal Shakespeare and Swan Theatres at Stratford-upon-Avon was officially opened this week after four years of redevelopment

The project created a reworked 1,040-seat theatre within a Grade II*-listed shell of a 1930s Art Deco building and also features a 36-metre-tall viewing tower.

Completed in July this year, the new main auditorium features a single-skin brick wall which begins outside the building, creating a three to four storey-high teak-floored space between it and the original theatre boundary.

While the existing building has been out of action, the RSC has performed in The Courtyard Theatre, a semi-permanent corrugated iron structure designed by Ian Ritchie Architects with theatre designer Charcoalblue.

The AJ will publish a full building study of the theatre in AJ16.12.10.
