London-based practices Hawkins\Brown and Bennetts Associates have both opened outposts in Manchester
Earlier this month AJ120 Employer of the Year Hawkins\Brown launched its new Tariff Street studio in the city’s Northern Quarter, having arrived in the city at the beginning of the year (see AJ 06.02.15).
With capacity for up to 30 staff, the ‘dedicated Manchester studio’ is being headed by practice partner Katie Tonkinson who had been sharing office space before the new base was set up.
The firm is already working on a number of projects in the North West, including the soon-to-be-submitted University of Manchester’s Schuster Annexe.
Tonkinson said: ‘We’ve been planning, designing and building our Manchester studio for just over a year now, so it’s really great to finally open our home in the city. It’s exciting for me to see so many opportunities emerging in the city I grew up in and to be able to bring a slice of the Hawkins\Brown magic to these projects.’
Meanwhile 28-year-old Bennetts Associates, which employs 90 people in its London and Edinburgh studios, has this week opened its own Manchester base.
The studio at 3 Brazil Street will be run by existing directors Julian Lipscombe and Simon Erridge with support from associate director Gavin Pike and Adrian Lonsdale.
Lipscombe said: ‘It has long been our desire to establish a presence in the city but now feels like the right time to do so.
‘With current workload including Mayfield (pictured below), the construction of Chester Cultural Centre, planning granted for an office building at Airport City and inclusion on The Factory competition shortlist, this move strengthens our commitment to our clients and projects in the north-west.’
