BDP has won an international contest for a new 13,000m² cruise terminal at Zayed Port in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates (UAE)
The AJ100 practice defeated a raft of unnamed rivals to win the invited contest for the Abu Dhabi Ports Company-backed job.
Planned to complete in 2016, the terminal has been designed to handle up to three cruise vessels simultaneously.
BDP’s winning design features a lattice structure inspired by a ‘ghaf’ – the country’s national tree which is also known as the prosopis cineraria.
Alongside passenger facilities, the new building will include souvenir shops, restaurants and offices. A tourist information centre and passport border control area are also planned.
According to a statement from the studio: ‘Traditional Arabic ornaments, colours, and shapes, combined with modern architectural elements, define the new building’s distinctive style which celebrates the UAE’s cultural heritage and pays tribute to its long maritime history. ‘
Ground clearance work for the new structure has already started.
