BDP wins green light for Northampton station overhaul

The first stage in a series of regeneration proposals for Northampton has been given the green light - the revamp of the town’s 1965 station

BDP developed the outline design with Hyder Consulting, for client partners Network Rail and West Northamptonshire Development Corporation.

The scheme has received ‘prior planning approval’ from Northampton Borough Council. Full planning permission is not required as the site is covered by Network Rail’s permitted development rights.

BDP project director Peter Jenkins said: ‘BDP’s proposals for Northampton Station have developed from a masterplan study for the site and the wider area.’

‘The design concepts for the station focus on creating a new gateway to the town, reflecting the important civic role of this building in the surrounding urban environment.’

Later phases of the scheme, which will be subject to a separate planning application in future, include a major office development on land surrounding the station.

The plans will also support the redevelopment of former industrial land along the River Nene. The site is part of the proposal for a Northampton Waterside Enterprise Zone, which is currently being considered by government and has the potential to create over 13,000 jobs.

Northampton Borough Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and enterprise Tim Hadland, said: ‘A new and modern railway station is an important part of the regeneration of our town.

‘We already have a number of exciting projects underway and are working on proposals such as an Enterprise Zone which will bring businesses and jobs to Northampton.’
