BDP bags Shanghai boost

BDP has landed a £400 million deal to design a retail and leisure development in Shanghai

The practice will provide architecture, landscape and lighting design for the Bund X-Change scheme in the Bund Historical and Cultural Conservation Zone.

Historical buildings in the Huangpu District of the East Nanjing Roadwill be renovated to host high-end retail and leisure facilities, a luxury club and a boutique hotel.

The 9,600m² site will also host a commercial building and three below-ground floors for retail and car parking.

BDP chairman David Cash last month (AJ 24.07.2012) told AJ the practice may open offices in the north and south of China to complement its Shanghai base, as well as looking to hire more local architects.

‘In three or four years’ time, when the economy is recovering in the UK, our aim is to make the Shanghai office self-sustaining,’ he said.

‘You need to be aware of the speed with which local architects are developing. We need to compete with them on their territory as well as ours.’
