Bblur wins green light for Slough cultural centre

  • Comment

Bblur has bagged planning permission for its 4,500m² library and cultural centre within the £450 million Heart of Slough town centre regeneration project

An offshoot of 3DReid, the London-based practice took on the detailed design of the scheme from their former employers, updating initial masterplan ideas released back in January 2008 (AJ 23.01.08).

According to Slough Borough Council, the project joins the new bus station - which is now under construction and has also be designed by Bblur - ‘as another iconic landmark’ for the centre of the town made famous in BBC2’s sitcom The Office.

The scheme boasts a library with 2.5 kilometres of book shelves, a 180-seat performance space, adult learning and teaching rooms, function rooms, exhibition areas and a café.

An internal pedestrian link will join up the new bus station and Mackenzie Square, and provide a sympathetic backdrop to St Ethelbert’s Church.

Andrew Stevens, assistant director of Learning and Cultural Engagement at Slough Borough Council said: ‘The new building not only looks great, it will bring a new sense of community into the heart of Slough.

‘It brings together a range of community and cultural activities right into the town centre.’

Construction work on the new library and cultural centre is due to start by early 2012 and it is hoped the new centre will be ready to use from 2013.

The existing town centre library will continue to operate as normal until then.
