Photography by Issa Bensalem

Tony and Anne Ray's brief for extending their home in North Parade, West Park, Leeds, required a new garden room and garage, detached from the main house.

The extension was to be a bold piece of modern architecture that respected the existing house. The clients wanted the garden room to provide a place to sit and feel part of the garden.

The project's design approach developed through a close relationship between the client, architect and builder. That close relationship between the parties involved enabled a structure to be created that handles the transition from the original Edwardian style at the front of the house to the new contemporary garden room at the rear, and a succession of degrees of containment that bring the garden into the room.

The engineer was Symonds Group; contractor Fielding and Jackson Builders. Costs exclude VAT and fees.

Cost: £57,000
