Engineer Battle McCarthy has been picked to design a new building system for Cable & Wireless' global programme of switch centre construction. The operator needs large, quick-assembly buildings to house the growing number of computers needed to power the internet. It has put the engineer in charge of developing a prefabricated system. Project manager Mohammed Azhar said its system revolved around 'a series of building blocks 12m by 3.5m by 3.5m which fit into a steel chassis'. The system cuts construction time for a 1,500m building from 28 weeks for concrete frame to 17 weeks.
