Battersea developers unveil £5.5bn plan

Developer Treasury Holdings UK is confident that a planning application for a £5.5 billion scheme to redevelop Battersea Power Station in London will be agreed by Wandsworth council

Proposals for the iconic building, which featured on the cover of Pink Floyd’s 1977 album Animals, include a conference centre, 3,700 homes, offices, shops and restaurants.

The 40-acre site by the Thames in south-west London will also include a six-acre riverside park, and create ‘a compelling and vibrant new urban quarter for London’.

An earlier version of the plan from Rafael Vinoly included a 300-metre glass funnel and atrium, but was rejected by Boris Johnson who said nothing on the site should overshadow the power station.

Treasury Holdings spokesman Rob Tincknell said: ‘We are extremely confident that two years of detailed discussions mean that this masterplan represents the aspirations and concerns of all the stakeholders involved, not least the Battersea community.’

The application follows a year-long consultation process. Wandsworth council leader Edward Lister said: ‘We have already granted outline permission at a separate site in the area for the new US Embassy.

‘These two important projects are hugely symbolic and demonstrate the scale of the commitment to this new urban quarter in the heart of London.’
