Culture minister Tony Banks has confirmed he has listed 109 historic barracks and upgraded a further 14 (aj 9.7.98), including Upnor Castle, which is now Grade I.

The list includes Chelsea's Duke of York hq, now Grade II, Greenwich's Royal Military Academy, upgraded to II*, and Hounslow Barracks, the only surviving example of Britain's first domestic barracks, ordered by Pitt the Younger.

Stephenson Bell's creation of 80 apartments within the upper floors of Smithfield Buildings in central Manchester was one of three completed projects to win a riba Housing Design Award last week. The practice also took one of the nine awards for uncompleted projects for its mixed-use development for Crosby Homes at Knott Mill Bridge, Manchester.
