Back to the past: DeLorean factory plans up for sale

Architectural plans for the DeLorean car plant in Belfast are to go up for sale at auction after being found almost 30 years to the day after they were drawn-up

The plans, dated 12 August, 1979, reflect the optimism surrounding the Dunmurry-based sports-car factory ahead of its official opening in early 1981.

Work on the ill-fated 660,000 square foot plant on the outskirts of Twinbrook began in October 1978 and was completed by Farrans McLaughlin and Harvey 16 months later.

Although fewer than 9,000 cars were produced in its manufacturing life between 1981 and 1982, the company’s silver Gull-Wing sports was immortalised in the cult movie Back to The Future and became an iconic car.

The plans which started the DeLorean’s history will now go under the hammer at McAfee Auctions in Ballymoney with an expected sale price of between £50 and £100.

Gerry McAfee, principal auctioneer of McAfee Auctions, said: ‘We hold regular auctions in our sale room in Ballymoney and often turn up very interesting items which relate to the social history of Northern Ireland but this certainly is one of the more unusual things we have been asked to sell.’

And if you want them you'd better get moving - they're listed as "616 Two Sets of De Lorean Car Construction Plans" in the catalogue for TODAY's auction!
