Birmingham-based Axis Design Collective has unveiled this masterplan to redevelop the Irish quarter of Britain's second city following a research study. Traditionally the Digbeth Road area of the city was where Irish immigrants settled.
Today there are few residents but the area is still home to several Irish institutions, including the Irish Centre and the headquarters of the Irish Community Forum. Some of the proposed schemes include a four-block retail, residential and commercial arcade and a pedestrian square. However, the focal point of the design is to regenerate the River Rea, which runs through the city but is currently hidden from view.
