Aukett Fitzroy Robinson’s £150 million project to revamp Ashdown House in Victoria, central London, has started on site
Completed in 1975, the Elsom, Pack and Roberts-designed glass and granite building is now known as 123 Victoria Street and owned by developer Land Securities.
On schedule to complete in 2012, Aukett Fitzroy Robinson will replace the 21,100m² building’s glazing and revamp shop fronts at street level, improving energy efficiency and maximising natural lighting.
Robert Noel, managing director of Land Securities’ London Portfolio, said: ‘This is the next step in our masterplan to regenerate this important destination in the heart of the capital.
‘We are using the once in a lifetime opportunity that government downsizing gives us to completely rejuvenate Victoria for residents, businesses and visitors.’
Following the completion of EPR Architects’ nearby Cardinal Place scheme in 2005, the revamp is part of Land Securities’ plans to spruce up the central London district.
In August, the AJ revealed that Lynch Architects had seen off an international shortlist to land a job redeveloping Kingsgate House which is just opposite 123 Victoria Street.
Next door to Ashdown House, Westminster Council has delayed revealing the winner of a design competition it launched to upgrade the public piazza in front of the John Francis Bentley-designed Westminster Catholic Cathedral. An announcement is expected in the New Year.
