Crossrail have awarded the last of their train station design contracts to a consortium of Atkins, Arup and Allies & Morrison
The new Custom House overground station in East London will be largely prefabricated off-site to reduce both cost and carbon footprint.
The design team used a Meccano-style ‘Box Kit’ (pictured) to sway the client, Crossrail.
Due to its proximity to an existing DLR station - and the Excel conference centre -design had to be as low impact as possible.
‘It is an incredibly complicated site and we needed an elegant and efficient design and engineering solution to meet the project requirements,’ said Simon Layzell, programme delivery director at Atkins.
‘By maximising the use of off-site fabrication techniques we will be able to guarantee quality before assembly begins and also significantly reduce the time needed to complete the build’.
