Astudio’s Raine’s Foundation School overhaul completes

Richard Hyams’ practice Astudio has completed the £22 million overhaul and extension of the Raine’s Foundation School in Bethnal Green

Commissioned by Tower Hamlets Council and built under the scrapped Building Schools for the Future programme, the scheme includes a new build addition clad in dark metric brick linked to the existing Grade II-listed Victorian school building, which has been refurbished.

Together, the buildings house 750 pupils and are joined by a large, two-storey glazed box. A rooftop science garden and play area increases the outside space.

Hyams said: ‘Key to this project was maximising the site in order to accommodate more pupils and provide a better mix of learning spaces. We sought to blend the old and new to create a striking and inspiring new school that interacts with its surroundings.

‘In the summer months, the feeling of sitting among the trees in the new building will be a real treat.’

The building has achieved a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ standard.
