Pictured at left is a glimpse of life chez William Morris. Centrepiece of the bedroom at Kelmscott Manor was a seventeenth-century carved oak four-poster bed. Daughter May embroidered the hangings while Morris himself composed the verse that embellishes the pelmet. The photograph is from William Morris by Charlotte and Peter Fiell (Taschen, £16.99).
