Arup Associates was today crowned a leader in insectoid design, winning the golden beetle top prize in British Land and the City of London’s bug hotel contest

The open competition asked designers to propose a sustainble ‘insect hotel’ to be installed in one of five City of London parks.

Mick Brundle of the winning practice said: ‘we were delighted to hear when we were shortlisted, then we suddenly realised we had only two weeks to build the thing!’

‘All the material is from my garden in north London – its got my old sneakers in there aswell! In fact I got stung by one of the occupants, a very nice large solitary bee came out and whacked me on the finger.’

The people’s favourite was awarded to the Beevarian Antsel and Gretel Chalet at Cleary Garden, designed by chartered accountant Lynette Lackey and banker Ingeborg Warschke of the German Women’s Property Group.

Lackey said: ‘It’s already buzzing, they are already insects and bees flying around.’

The prize winners and the three shortlisted designs, by Ortulos Architects, developers Brookfield and landscape designers Fisher Tomlin, will be on permanent display.

Ivan Redi of shortlisted Ortulos Architects said: ‘This our first attempt, its a big success. We have already taken a couple of orders. We were thinking about franchising the idea.’

Explaining the inspiration for his design, he added: ‘I watched a bee movie, with this little bee who wants to help a revolt against people wanting to use the honey for free.’
