Are our children no more than accessories?

I am puzzled by Future Systems' 'prototype (below) for the classroom of the future' (AJ 25.7.02) and wonder if this proposal is as vacuous as it looks. The caption says that the classroom will provide 'a genuinely new experience for all those involved in the learning process'. On the basis of the pictures that you reproduce, who would argue, as there is no sign of anything going on that resembles learning? That the children are shown simply as accessories in a fashion shoot, rather than participants in the education process, is truly disturbing. Mastering the use of a mobile phone seems to be the biggest challenge on offer.

Has the DfES really fallen for this scheme?
